The experiment was conducted by Dinda and Mario on Saturday, 10th May 2008 at 4pm in Botanical Garden.
Rationale :
To use the environment as the medium to deliver a message and how observe people respond to them. The message chosen was recycling, therefore, in the practice of the experiment, the recycle logo was made with dead leaves, which were picked up on the venue.
Summary
Overall, the experiment exceeded our expectation. People came with some good responses and even look for further development or continuity of the project. In general sense, people seem to like the idea of using environment as a medium to deliver information. It is catchy, efficient, effective and sustainable. In more detail, responses like “brilliant” and “good job” indicate the fact that the concept is appreciated.
As we observed, we realised that there is a chance that people accepted the message easily because of the materials that we used for the medium. Dead leaves were used to create the logo of recycle, so in that sense people could see the relationship between the medium and the message itself. The fact that dead leaves might not shape the recycle logo as precise as the printed or screen version does not change people’s good response to the idea; although some people could not recognise the logo at the first sight.
Based on our previous research, older generations tend to prefer traditional mediums to modern ones, which are likely to be digitalised nowadays. However, the experiment proved that ideology wrong as the concept of using traditional medium (environment) seemed to be appealing for any generations, from little children to older people.
