Dinda’s Ideas:
- Brainstorm 1 click to view
- Brainstorm 2
- Brainstorm 3
- Brainstorm 3.1
- Picture 1 – play around with illussions
- Picture 2 – Interact with a giant medium
- Picture 3 – Play with perspective
- Picture 4 – Human- interacted medium (I thought this is really an interesting way to expand the function of a medium and I was really keen on this idea. However we were worried if the experiment may not be as productive as we want it to be. Therefore we decided not to do so).
- Picture 5 – Using an environment as the medium and also make it as part of the content.
Frits’ Ideas:
- Picture 1 – as our group was discussion the reappropriation of content; and more specifically, government messages, this advertisement in Flinders Station was put up.
- Picture 2 – an interesting graphic, it seems to depict a sharpened stone of the first documented tools in human history, killing the human. Perhaps a slant on ‘technology overtaking our lives’?
- Picture 3 – an interesting visual; somewhat mimicking a sort of irony of McLluhan’s medium is the message, in some form.
Mario’s Ideas:
Westin employee interview
“be inspired, be westin”
- use ribbon to write on ‘what is your goal’ with a permanent marker and put on the board (canteen)
- each people represents westin meet & greet
- welcoming note
- shots
- 3-min angels for conference
- massage
- so people become relaxed
Every westin has their own characteristics.
Why does an ad appeal to you? Because it relates to your human truth.
Mediums : uniform to represent brand, everything (feel, touch, smell) represents brand, environment, people
Rough ideas for lab experiments
“Personal medium (used by individuals) but seen by public” –> ?
1. news on coffee cup
–> recycle-able medium & recycle-able information
–> coffee is one of the most popular drink worldwide
–> 1.4 billion cups consumed everyday
–> hot coffee –> hot gossip
2. sticky-note poster
–> let people write on them given certain context
–> personal / private medium being public
–> do they still interpret –> use the same way?
3. interactive poster
–> expanding the intial function of poster (static image & text)
–> is it more enganging? –> better medium to deliver information?
4. T-shirt
–> people & T-shirt are the mediums
–> personal medium (worn by individual) but seen by public
–> is it bad / good?
5. storyboard vs. film
–> David Hockney’s photographs
–> maybe another small focus group / discussion ?
6. environment
–> text & images all over the environment
–> e.g. ‘Do more recycling’ –> recycleable items, images, text
7. people
–> change the system –> behaviour
–> e.g. don’t smoke –> make it difficult to smoke
Final outcomes :
1. design book
2. website
3. product(s) from experiments
Mediums : technology (digital), technology (non-digital), nature
More realistic experiment ideas :
1. coffee up
–> make 12 coffee cups and distribute to different random participants
–> participants will get free coffee at the coffee shop
2. sticky note –> replacing signs
–> put instruction to go to a certain place
–> give them something if they reach the intended place
3. interactive poster
–> use iPod at the back of the poster (will be connected with a headphone plug)
–> hide the iPod at the back of the poster / frame
–> put in uni
4. sound instructions
–> signs (in sound form) leading to a toilet (or any other place)
–> work if you press the play button
–> maybe use the recorder from a birthday card recorder (for example)
5. provide screen and storyboard
–> make vote : movie or photographs / storyboard
–> maybe in uni?
6. environment
–> use leaves / flowers / etc.
–> in the park (e.g. botanical garden)
–> observe how people react to it
7. boxes
–> use a pole to stick 3 boxes
–> 3 boxes with different directions –> can be rotated as well (ambiguity)
‘Way-finding Game’ plan
Theme : Office
Spots :
1. level 2 stairs : “Go down to the front of the elevator”
–> CcD
–> postcard *
–> coffee cup *
2. level 1 in front of lift : “Take the lift and go to the front of level 3’s elevator”
–> paper
–> bottle
–> sports bag
3. level 4 in front of the elevator : “Go to the end of the corridor”
–> label *
–> paper clip *
–> a piece of cloth *
4. level 4 at the end of the corridor : “Ccheck the photocopy room”
–> sticky note
–> sandals
–> medicine box (wrapped with paper)
5. level 4 photocopy room : “Well done, you’ve completed all the instructions. Go to the room ….. in level 5″
–> ruler
–> food container *
–> magazine (wrapped with paper)
* = things to buy :
- postcard
- coffee cup
- label
- paper clip
- a piece of cloth
- food container
Mario’s questions :
1. What is your impression after doing the experiment (finding instructions)?
2. You take ….. minutes and ….. seconds to complete the instructions. What do you think of that?
3. Which mediums were easy / difficult to find? Why?
4. If the mediums were signs (instead of what they are), would the test be any different?
5. Is there any better medium(s) for this context? Why?
Dinda’s questions :
1. What do you think about the use of medium on signs today? (clear/unclear? too much? Interesting?)
2. Do you pay much attention to signs?
3. What signs? Where?
4. How did you go in finding the mediums? (easy? Difficult?, fun?)
5. What are the most interesting mediums out of those you have found?
6. C can you please tell us your opinions about the mediums that we have used to show signs today.
After consultation with Nicki
Looking at how people respond to messages in different forms (medium)
less resolved
relate back to language –> visual / verbal
significance in commercial world
–> creating innovative
–> how you could you use it with the knowledge of how people know language
–> different cultures –> how can you take what’s the point? how are we doing? what we’ve got out of it andy goldsmith –> environmental artist (rocks, leaves, etc.) in this world of clutter –> create message with environment
